Just as it is implied that the Jackacuda’s fishing hole was a well kept secret of local Destin fisherman, even more so is the Brotula. Brotula, commonly known to local fisherman as the Cusk Eel, is a rare Gulf fish found in deeper waters of 300+ feet, usually considered more or less a bi-catch. Local captains are amongst some of the only people that are truely familiar of this fish and realize its’ status as a delicacy of sorts. Not only in the tradition of the secret of Jackacudas fishing hole, but also in the tradition of Destin itself as one of the country’s most beautiful and secret beaches and fishing locals until recent decades, so is the Brotula. Furthermore, just as Jackacudas and it’s history has been made known to the common public via our sister restaurant, Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi, so will the Brotula by us here at Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer!
“With the largest fishing vessel fleet in the state of Florida, Destin is branded the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village. Along with that title comes all the legendary fish tales, fishing lingo and secret fishing holes, some widely known and others secretly kept. Every great ‘Honey Hole’ has a story, and this is the story of Jackacudas. During the mid 80’s the Tenaco 80 was dropped to create an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico and quickly became the spot to catch monster amberjacks. This quickly became the local’s fishing spot to bring friends, family and tourists. During a trip to the Teneco 80 spot, in the mid 90’s, Legendary Destin Charter Boat Captain Dale Beebe took a charter to catch the celebrated monster amberjacks, but all they caught that summer day were barracuda. Barracuda have a way of putting on a spectacle, as the day was not a complete loss, the fish jumped in and out of the water delivering a show for all that were on the boat. On his way back from the trip, surrounding local Captains jumped on the radio to see how Captain Beebe did during his trip to the Teneco 80 and his response was “All I caught today were Jackacudas!” From that day forward the Teneco 80 spot was reborn as the Jackacudas Spot! Endlessly intrigued by the response, local Captains continue to bring their charters to this destination to catch the infamous ‘Jackacudas.’ As the famed fishing honey hole, Jackacudas Seafood + Sushi was created to bring excitement through food, but a relaxing atmosphere through the staff and styled in the same manner for locals to bring friends, family and tourists. Get comfortable, kick back and relax while you enjoy your time at your favorite honey hole – Jackacudas Seafood + Sushi.”
